You’ve likely heard of a popular diet that’s been sweeping the nation all the way back to the Stone Age called the paleo diet. It’s easy to see how this nutrition fad has been so well-received: when something isn’t working, we often like to “restart” or go back to the beginning. That’s what this diet does. It takes you back to the beginning of civilization to see what the health benefits were that propelled the human race hundreds and thousands of years into the future.


What exactly does this diet entail, however? A lot of people stop reading after they see the word “caveman,” since we’ve evolved as a species. And even though we have evolved both in culture and diet, there are some surprisingly beneficial elements that are worth considering.

Back To Basics

Again, the biggest draw to this diet is that it takes you back to the basics of nutrition. This will help you to cut out all of the processed food that we as Americans have come to know as extremely common. There are a lot of foods that are deceptively unhealthy, and this helps to categorize food in a different way to showcase the positives and negatives.


Eat Fresh

On a paleo diet you will be eating a ton of fresh food. Not just fresh produce, but fresh food in general. You’ll find that you’re cooking more often, which will cut out harmful additives, as well. Of course, consuming more fresh food and produce has been something that health experts have been preaching since the beginning of time. Eating fresh, growing produce helps to cut down on inflammation and reconnect the body with kinder enzymes and nutrients. Plants will be your best friend on the paleo diet.


The Caveman Test

This is where the whole “caveman” aspect comes into play. The paleo diet really pushes the narrative, “If a caveman didn’t eat it, neither should you.” And if you think about it, it does make a lot of sense. If you’re trying to grow stronger and healthier, you’ll want to follow the footsteps that history has laid out for us.


Fruits, Nuts, and Meats – Oh My!

Paleo is all about getting the right types of foods into your system. You’ll want to stick to lean meats and things that offer healthy fats. Sugar is not a staple of the diet, however, fruit is essential. Because fruit comes from nature and was part of the diet that grew us to where we are today, and because the healthy elements found in fruit supplement a protein-filled diet well, this aspect of paleo is very important. Nuts are also going to be a great source of healthy fats and protein, and are great for snacking throughout the day.


And there you have it, in a nutshell. It’s not anything too crazy when you peel back the layers. It’s important to note, however, that the paleo diet isn’t for everyone. You will need to know how your body best responds to different diets and how a paleo will impact your current health needs, so consulting with a doctor prior to beginning a paleo diet is crucial.
